Mansberg Castle

The castle site Mansberg is an abandoned Niederungsburg southwest of Dettingen unter Teck in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The castle site is about two kilometers west of Dettingen unter Teck, on the eastern edge of the wooded ridge between the Lauter and Tiefenbachtal, in the Hagacker forest, not far from the Rauhen Wiesen on the valley side of the Öhmdbach. To the north, the facility is bounded by the 10 to 15 meter deep sloping gorge of the Mansberg trench that begins there.

history

Coat of arms of the Mansberg in the Zurich coat of arms roll (approx. 1340)

The castle, first mentioned in 1287 and built by the Lords of Mansberg , was later owned by ministerials . It fell into disrepair before 1450. In the Middle Ages, a hamlet developed near Mansberg Castle. This was only given up in the Thirty Years War .

description

Separated by a six to eight meter wide and three to five meter deep ditch , the 25 by 15 meter rectangular main castle (inner castle) stands out against the flat surrounding terrain.

The western outer bailey is similar in size to the main bailey. A deepening on this site could indicate a collapsed cellar vault. The outer bailey was also delimited by a moat with similar dimensions to the main castle. The ditch, which is up to five meters wide and up to four meters deep, continues as an additional ditch with a wall around the main castle. Another ditch with a rampart results in the direction of the plateau to the south and west.

The likely agricultural part of the complex is directly connected to the outer bailey.
