Wielandstein ruins

The Wielandstein ruin is a group of hilltop castles that today consists of the ruins of the Hinteren Wielandstein , the Zwischen-Wielandstein , the Middle Wielandstein , the Alt-Wielandstein and the Vorderen Wielandstein . You are on a rocky ridge of the Wielandstein above the Tobeltal, about 2000 meters southeast of Oberlenningen, a district of the municipality of Lenningen , in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The first castles of the group, the Alt-Wielandstein and the Hintere Wielandstein, were built around 1150, and since 1240 the Lords of Wielandstein, knightly servants of the Dukes of Teck , are mentioned, who gave up the castle around 1330. In 1386 the castle became the property of the Counts of Württemberg and in 1478 it was handed over to the Schilling family as free property. At this time, significant parts of the castle are no longer habitable and the castle continues to deteriorate. In 1525 the castle was completely destroyed in the Peasants' War and in 1553 it came into the possession of the municipality of Oberlenningen, which used the crumbling walls as a quarry. From 1976 to 1979 the remains of the castle were uncovered by the municipality of Lenningen.

Current

On January 7, 2015, there was a major rock fall, whereupon access to and hiking trails around the Wielandstein was blocked. The renovation work continues until it has been clarified whether further rock slopes are possible.
