Jörg Biel (born July 28, 1943 in Neuffen ; † July 18, 2015 in Grafenberg (Reutlingen district) ) was a German prehistoric archaeologist and worked for the state archeology in Baden-Württemberg for 35 years . Until his retirement in 2008 he was Baden-Württemberg's state curator .

Live and act

Jörg Biel was born in Neuffen at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Deeply rooted in the history of his homeland, he studied at the Institute for Prehistory and Early History, Prehistory and Geology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . After a six-month stay in Egypt to take part in the excavations on Elefantine Island , he returned to Tübingen. Even during his studies, Biel focused on a later activity in practical archaeological monument preservation by participating in five campaigns for the Heuneburg excavation, excavations by the former Tübingen State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and probes at Yale University in Nubia . He received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1972 with Wolfgang Kimmig with a dissertation on “Prehistoric hilltop settlements in southern Württemberg and Hohenzollern”. It was published as the 24th volume of the “Research and Reports on Prehistory and Early History in Baden-Württemberg”. To this day, this book forms the basis for assessing the settlement history of the Swabian Alb in prehistory and early history.

In 1972, Biel found a job at the newly founded Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office in Stuttgart. Its first task was to compile archaeological monuments in lists. In 1973 he became a consultant in the Stuttgart district , and in 1979 he became a conservator. In 1986 he took over the management of the archaeological monument preservation department in the Stuttgart administrative region, and in 1994 he was appointed state archaeologist and was thus in charge of all archaeological preservation in Baden-Württemberg. Since the administrative reform in 2005 and the reorganization of the preservation of monuments, Biel has been head of the department of fundamental issues and scientific services in the now renamed State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart regional council . On August 1st, 2008, Biel retired at a festive colloquium in Altheim .

His main interest was the Iron Age. Among other things, he excavated the early Celtic princely grave of Eberdingen-Hochdorf in 1978/79 . As head of department and state archaeologist, he ensured the strengthening of archeology in the preservation of monuments in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
