The Postal Kirchberg is an Outbound hilltop castle on the 475 m above sea level. NHN high "Kirchberg", also called "Doktorberg", on Thumseestrasse west of the old town of Bad Reichenhall in the district of Kirchberg in the Berchtesgadener Land district in Bavaria .
The castle was built in the first half of the 12th century by the Lords of Kirchberg and in 1228 a Heinrich von Kirchberg was mentioned.
The castle served to secure the so-called Güldenen Salzstrasse (Reichenhaller Salzstrasse) along today's Thumseestrasse. As early as 1262, the castle and other archbishop's fortifications in Karlstein were destroyed by Duke Heinrich von Niederbayern in disputes with the archbishop and the reconstruction was prevented by the knight Paltram , who resided at Karlstein Castle . After Archbishop Rudolf finally gave up the reconstruction on February 2, 1286, an agreement was reached with the Duke of Bavaria. Today the Kirchberg is privately owned and only a few overgrown wall remains are evidence of the former castle complex. The Burgstall is now a ground monument .
Kirchberg Castle is part of the Reichenhaller Burgenweg and was explored in 2002 by Johannes Lang and members of the Bad Reichenhall Local History Association.
