history
The castle was probably built between 1140 and 1180 by the Archbishop of Salzburg and served as a counterpart to Karlstein Castle during the 13th century . It was mentioned during the middle of the 13th century as … en hous heizzet Amrange. , the castle Amerang was then probably destroyed in 1262 at the same time as the castles Vager and Kirchberg by Duke Heinrich XIII.
description
From the former tower castle on a small rock plateau only small remnants of the curtain wall with a thickness of about 1.1 meters have been preserved. The cistern was partly carved into the rock, partly built with stones and covered with a waterproof layer of clay . Due to its design and exposed location, Amerang was probably not planned as an inhabited aristocratic residence, but as a counter-castle to Karlstein Castle. This is also supported by the lack of a farm yard and the fact that, due to the difficult-to-reach location, it was hardly possible to control the route from Reichenhall to the west. Under certain circumstances the facility was manned only temporarily. Bent arrowheads from the late 13th century, found during an archaeological investigation in 2002, indicate a military conflict that coincides with the destruction of the facility in 1262. Since scorch marks missing is to assume that when looping the ring walls were broken the castle.
Geographical location
The Amerang Castle is located at 570 m above sea level. NHN high rock head northwest of the Kugelbachbauern and directly opposite the Karlstein Castle in the Bad Reichenhaller district Karlstein . The ruin lies in steep, impassable terrain and is not open to the public.
