history

Vachenlueg Castle was built by the knights Martin and Hans von Haunsperg in 1414. Martin had made his fortune by helping Emperor Sigismund in his battles against the Turks in 1400 and 1403. The construction of Vachenlueg was finished in 1427 and this year Martin von Haunsberg calls himself after Vachenlueg for the first time and thus founded the center of a Salzburg manorial estate that existed until 1772. In 1459 Ritter Georg, Martin's older son, received from Emperor Friedrich III. permission to build and operate a public tavern , which is one of the oldest inns in the Berchtesgadener Land district today. From 1521 Hans and Wilhelm von Haunsperg shared the rule of Vachenlueg.

After the Haunsperger were raised to baron status in 1635 and counts in 1675 , their rule ended in 1699 with the death of Franz von Haunsperg at Vachenlueg Castle .

After the death of the Bavarian councilor Count von Haunsperg in 1724, Counts Johann and Gabriel von Arco and Franz Freiherr von Ow inherit the Vachenlueg estate and sell it to the Höglwörth monastery . Even before the Höglwörth monastery was dissolved in 1817, the castle was named as "an old dilapidated building with a decent interior ...".

After two more sales, the castle fell into ruin and was used as a quarry. In 1825 a wooden emergency chapel was built and replaced by a brick one in 1848.

In 1890, the locksmith Franz Edfelder bought the ruined castle from the village. The moat is covered by two landslides and in 1954 the south wall was blown up because of the risk of collapse.

From 2008, the remains of the wall will be taken over by the “Heimatkundliche Arbeitskreis Anger e. V. ”was renovated with the community, the“ Froschkönig ”tavern was sold and the inn was given up. The Burgplatz is now a ground monument .

The historic tavern belonging to Vachenlueg Castle is now privately owned by Reinhold and Elisabeth Walter and has been run as a guest house with holiday apartment "Taverne Vachenlueg" since 2014.
