The castle was built in 1614 on the northern outskirts of the town by Stiftsdekan Degenhart Neuchinger “on sain aignen loads” and from then on served as a residence for “Stiftskanzler, senior monastery officials and wood goods publishers”. In the course of the forced pledging of the Berchtesgaden saltworks Schellenberg and Frauenreuth to the Electorate of Bavaria , the Electoral Bavarian Main Salt Office temporarily occupied the building from 1795 . In the spring of 1803 spent Joseph Conrad Schroff mountain Moes , formerly the last prince bishop of the bishoprics of Freising and Regensburg and last Prince Provost of Berchtesgaden Provostry , his last weeks in Adelsheim Castle, where he died on April 4 1,803th

At the beginning of the 19th century, the timber goods publisher Johann Nepomuk Wallner exhibited his sample collection of around 12,000 exhibits in Adelsheim Castle, which in 1808 was recognized as one of the main attractions of the town in the first Berchtesgaden travel guide.

In private ownership until 1961, the castle has been owned by the Berchtesgaden district since 1963 and the Berchtesgadener Land district since 1972 .

The Berchtesgaden Local History Museum , founded in 1897, has been located in this Renaissance castle since 1968. One of the focal points of the collection is a permanent exhibition of historical and current specimens of the Berchtesgaden War .
