Ernest Charles "Butch" Deadmarsh (born April 15, 1950 in Trail , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 141 games for the Buffalo Sabers , Atlanta Flames and Kansas City Scouts in the course of his active career between 1968 and 1978 of the National Hockey League (NHL) as well as 263 others for the Vancouver Blazers , Calgary Cowboys , Minnesota Fighting Saints , Edmonton Oilers and Cincinnati Stingers in the World Hockey Association (WHA) on the position of left winger . His second cousin , Adam Deadmarsh , was also a professional ice hockey player in the NHL.
Career
Deadmarsh spent his junior career first in his home province of British Columbia , where he ran up between 1966 and 1968 for the Kelowna Buckaroos from the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL). After the striker was named Rookie of the Year in his first year , he found himself in the First All-Star Team after his second season in the league. He then moved to the higher-class Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). Deadmarsh played there for the Brandon Wheat Kings between 1968 and 1970 . In a total of 110 missions he scored 124 times, which finally brought him the selection in the NHL Amateur Draft 1970 by the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League (NHL). They had pulled him 15th in the second round.
At the beginning of the 1970/71 season , the 20-year-old was in the squad of the Buffalo Sabers, who went into their first year after being admitted to the league. Deadmarsh initially played ten games there, in which he remained pointless, before he was given to the farm team Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The Canadian finished the season with the Golden Eagles. In the two following years he did not succeed in permanently asserting himself in Buffalo's NHL squad, which he mainly went for the Cincinnati Swords in the American Hockey League (AHL) on the ice. In February 1973, the attacker was finally transferred in exchange for Norm Gratton to the Atlanta Flames , who were in their first season in the league. There the Canadian made the final leap into the NHL and remained loyal to the team until the end of the 1973/74 season .
In the summer of 1974 Deadmarsh signed a valid from the 1975/76 season three-year contract with the Vancouver Blazers , who were active in the World Hockey Association (WHA), which was then competing with the NHL . After he was selected in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft by the newly formed Kansas City Scouts , the attacker announced that he would rather play in the WHA instead of the NHL. He then boycotted the training camp and was then suspended in September 1974. After Deadmarsh gave in, the suspension was lifted. He ran in 20 games for Kansas City, but the situation was no longer acceptable for both parties, so that the offensive player in November 1974 became the first player to be sold from an NHL to a WHA franchise . The price was $ 30,000. Finally, Deadmarsh ran on for the Vancouver Blazers, who moved to Calgary in the summer of 1975 and continued gaming there under the name Calgary Cowboys . With 54 points scorer in 79 games this season, the winger had by far his best year in the professional field.
Nevertheless, the Cowboys did not continue to work with him before the beginning of his last year of contract, so that he was transferred to the Minnesota Fighting Saints in September 1976 together with Jack Carlson and Dave Antonovich . In return, the Fighting Saints gave Jim Harrison to Calgary. For Minnesota Deadmarsh completed 35 games by January 1977 before he moved back to the Calgary Cowboys. Initially, a swap deal with Rich Lemieux was considered, but when he refused, the Cowboys bought their ex-player, as did John Arbor and Danny Gruen . In the Cowboys, the offensive player was able to build on his performances from the previous year and collected 30 scorer points in 38 games by the end of the season. Previously, he had only scored 13 points for Minnesota. After the Calgary Cowboys ceased playing in the summer of 1977, Deadmarsh moved to the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent . There the 27-year-old began the 1977/78 season , before he was given to the Cincinnati Stingers in exchange for Del Hall at the end of the 1977 calendar year . After the game year, the attacker ended his career as an active player.
