Bye Bye (Eng. "Goodbye") is the second studio album of the NDW band trio and was released in August 1983 .

background

After Trio had celebrated worldwide success with their hit Da da da in mid-1982 , it was necessary to release a second album soon. However, numerous TV appointments kept the group from working in the studio, and the single Anna - Lassmichrein Lassmichraus was only released in October 1982 , which was only followed by the successful single Bum bum in May 1983 . At the beginning of 1983, the trio left their common house in Großenkneten , because due to the increased media and fan hype they were no longer given a suitable creative environment. The three moved with their own studio into a house in the Swiss mountains, where they rehearsed new songs. The two already released singles finally appeared on the album in alternative versions or recordings.

The recordings for the new album took place almost entirely in the studio of the band Can in Weilerswist . Jaki love time and Holger Czukay of Can also took part in a song on the album ( W. W. W. ).

They couldn't and didn't want to repeat the uncompromising minimalism that Trio had presented on their first album. Therefore, almost all songs on Bye Bye are not just reduced to drums, guitar and vocals. In almost all of the tracks a bass could be heard, played by Klaus Voormann , who also produced the album at the same time.

Further recordings took place at Christmas 1982 in the USA, where they recorded the Christmas carol Turaluraluralu - Ich mach BuBu what are you doing .

All tracks that were released from the album as a single were also produced in English ( Herz ist Trumpf (Then you call ...) - Hearts Are Trump , Bum Bum - Boom Boom , Turaluraluralu - Ich mach BuBu what are you doing - Tooralooralooraloo - Is It Old & Is It New , Anna - Lassmichrein Lassmichraus - Anna - Letmein Letmeout ). Another song ( Out in the Streets ) was even provided with spoken English subtitles.

The album was released worldwide in various versions in August 1983:

  • In Germany, the album was released under the name Bye Bye with an almost white cover, which was divided into eight fields. In the second of the fields there was an advertisement for the motorcycle helmet company " UVEX ". According to a notice on the album, anyone could publish additional advertisements (at a price of DM 10,000 per advertisement and circulation) on the cover. The second edition of the album was completely white, however, due to legal uncertainties. From the third edition, the album filled more and more with advertisements until the cover was completely filled with advertisements in early 1984, including classifieds and personals. A total of five editions were published. The advertising revenue was donated to Greenpeace .
  • In the USA and Canada the album was released with a completely different cover and under the title Trio and Error . The US version also contained the song Da Da Da ; in Canada it was heard on an earlier trio record.
  • In other foreign countries, the album was also released under the name Bye Bye , but with a trio photo on the cover. The album was released in almost all European countries, but also in South America , Africa , Australia and Japan .

The CD version of the album was only released in 1986 and shows the cover of the third edition. The CD has not been reissued since then and is considered a rarity.

criticism

Rolling Stone (USA):

“These guys are more adventurous and daring than most minimalists, and their musical spectrum spans the entire spectrum of rock music - and beyond in search of cool sounds. So, 'Boom Boom' - the best reef rocker of the year - greets the Troggs and Black Sabbath ; the irresistible 'three men in a double bed' combines a simple pubchant with a great synthesizer melody; and the semisoulful 'Out in the Streets' with its boulevard accordion and the old Hammond organ recalls the thoughtful atmosphere of Bob Dylans / The Bands ' Basement Tapes '. Rock fans should run, not run, to buy this record. "

Trivia

  • The record release party took place in Großenkneten in October 1983 . Numerous journalists were invited who had to play football against the local football club TSV Großenkneten. Peter Behrens played the referee (red plastic heart instead of red card); and Kralle Krawinkel also played as a club member. TSV Großenkneten won the game 5-1.
  • The instrumental song "WWW" means "Wir wolln Watt" and was a contribution to a benefit LP by Greenpeace .
  • The song Wake Up was composed by Yoko Ono and was a contribution to an LP that contained only interpretations of Ono songs. The contact to Ono was made through the Beatles intimate Klaus Voormann. The song was only released on the German pressing of Bye Bye .
