Calea Ferată din Moldova (short CFM ; Russian Железная дорога Молдовы - Schelesnaja doroga Moldowy; abbreviation SDM or ЖдМ) is the Moldovan railway company . It emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union as the successor to the Soviet railways and their subdivision Молдовская железная дорога / Moldowskaja Schelesnaja Doroga on the Moldovan territory. The UIC assigned the country code 23 to the company. The General Director of Moldovan Railways is Iurii Topala.

history

The railway company was established in 1991 as the successor to the Soviet railways and their Moldovskaya Sheleznaya Doroga subdivision, which was founded on July 15, 1979. On March 30, 1992, the agendas for the operation of the railway were handed over to the Ministry of Transport and Traffic, to which the company is subject to this day. In addition to the lines taken over by SŽD, some new lines were also built. Due to the secession of Transnistria and the problem of the use of the railways in this area by the Moldavian Railways, the line from Chișinău to Căinari , which was closed and destroyed in 1944, was reactivated in autumn 2005 so that trains can run again to the southern parts of Moldova. In 2008 the new line from Giurgiuleşti to Cahul was added. In 2005 the parts of the route in the area claimed by Transnistria were finally separated. Since then, these have been administered by the Pridnestrovskaja schelesnaja doroga ("Transnistrian Railways"). The narrow-gauge line starting from Popeljuchy in Ukraine and also ending in Transnistria / Camenca (see Hajworon narrow-gauge network ) has been closed since 1997; most of the tracks were removed in 1999.

According to a report in Lok Report magazine, which in turn refers to an article by the Moldovan newspaper Timpul de dimineața , the state railway company has been on the brink of bankruptcy since 2017. In particular, the sharp decline in the number of passengers by up to 60 percent and the low freight traffic are causes of this. The debts should amount to 700 million lei (a good 33 million euros, exchange rate at the end of 2017). Since then, train traffic has been severely restricted, with only individual passenger trains running.

business

In 2010, the Moldovan railway network covered a route length of 1239.3 kilometers, of which 1225.4 kilometers are Russian broad gauge (1520 mm) and 13.9 kilometers are standard gauge (1435 mm). With the exception of the route between Rosdilna and Bender, the lines of the Moldavian Railways are continuously single-track and not electrified, so the traffic is carried out by diesel-powered vehicles. In the West the network to the borders Romanian Railways (with lane change from 1520 to 1435 millimeters. See Umspurung ), to the east by the network of Ukrainian Railways . The following routes are currently in operation:
