action

George Cooper and his girlfriend Lauren Daniels live together in a Soho apartment . George is a photographer and recently illustrated a cover story about the " sewer rats," homeless New Yorkers who live in the rambling sewer system beneath the city. An elderly homeless person calls him from the police station because she tried to steal a gun from a police officer. George puts the bail and together they go down the sewer. There they meet a companion of the woman who was apparently bitten by a large animal.

Captain Bosch is an experienced police captain whose wife has just disappeared. However, the Mayor of New York has ordered that missing persons cases in the area should not be investigated. Bosch investigates on its own and comes across the slightly crazy soup cook AJ Shepherd, who is only called "Reverend" by his customers. He told him of rumors about men in white suits streamed through the canals with Geiger counters and of rumors about creepy creatures that are decimating the homeless population. Bosch goes to George, but since nobody is home, he breaks the door with AJ and steals the latest photos with the bite wound.

Bosch confronts the mayor and Wilson, the head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), with what he found. The NRC would like to cover everything up, but Bosch insists on an explanation. In fact, radioactive toxic waste has created monstrous creatures, the so-called CHUDs (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller), which feed on human flesh. The control authority also has a plan to solve this problem: the entire sewer system is to be flooded with gas. Bosch tries to prevent this by all means. Meanwhile, the monsters strike above the sewer and attack Lauren, who manages to escape.

In the meantime George and AJ have disappeared into the sewer. Since this has been sealed, both flee from the monsters and with Bosch's help they can get out of the predicament. In the meantime, however, Wilson has gone nuts and attacks the three. Lauren comes to the rescue at the last second, and a massive gas explosion kills Wilson. The New York press speculates about the real causes of the disaster.

background

The film opened in the United States on August 31, 1984 in a total of 314 theaters. On the opening weekend, he grossed $ 1,762,922 and was ranked 13th on the box office charts. In total, he grossed just over $ 4 million.

There was no theatrical release in Germany; the film started on video in 1985 and was published by Constantin Film . The first version was cut by around 15 minutes. However, the film was released in 2008 in full on DVD in an FSK18 version, the re-inserted passages were left in the original sound. A year later, an uncut version for people aged 16 and over was re-evaluated by the FSK.

The censorship fell victim to an early role of John Goodman in the cut version . He plays a policeman who flirts with a diner waitress and is then killed by one of the creatures. This scene was integrated into the film again, but is also included as an alternative ending on the DVD.

criticism

CHUD - Panic in Manhattan is a typical Reagan-era B-movie . It includes all the elements that played a role in the horror film at that time: a phony government, massive pollution and the dangers of nuclear power . Still, it was slow to achieve cult status.

“Through nuclear radiation, the homeless in a New York borough mutate into cannibalistic monsters that nothing can stop them. Inconsistently staged horror film that strings together the usual clichés and shock effects and speculates with fears of civilization. "
