Chia-Chiao Lin
Chia-Chiao Lin , often quoted by CC Lin, ( Chinese 林 家 翹 , * July 7, 1916 in Beijing ; † January 13, 2013 ibid) was a Sino-American physicist and applied mathematician who dealt with hydrodynamics .
Lin graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1937 with a degree in physics and then taught at his university. In 1939 he was selected for a scholarship and went to Canada in 1940 , where he received his master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1941 . In 1944 he received his doctorate under Theodore von Kármán at Caltech , where he also taught. 1945 to 1947 he taught at Brown University and then from 1947 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologywhere he became Professor in 1953 and Institute Professor in 1963. In 1987 he retired there. In November 2001, Lin was appointed professor at Tsinghua University and has lived in Beijing since 2002.
Lin is best known for his investigations into hydrodynamic stability issues (also with applications to gas turbines , aircraft wing vibrations, shock waves , turbulence). From the end of the 1950s he also dealt with applications of hydrodynamics in astrophysics (including density waves in the formation of spiral galaxies , with Frank Shu , but also gravitational collapse and star formation ) and on liquid helium . He also dealt with numerical mathematics and analysis , solving a long open problem about the asymptotic solution of ordinary differential equations higher than second order near turning points.
From 1972 to 1974 he was President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics .
In 1979 he was the first to receive the hydrodynamics award from the American Physical Society . In 1976 he received the NAS Award in Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis from the National Academy of Sciences . In 1973 he received the Otto Laporte Prize and in 1975 the Tymoshenko Medal . From 1958 he was a member of the Academia Sinica . In addition, from 1994 he was an external member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1951), the National Academy of Sciences (1962) and the American Philosophical Society (1978) . In 1954 and 1960 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1982 he was a Killian Lecturer at MIT. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Caltech and an honorary doctorate from Tsinghua University in 1987.
