Niday began his career in midget car racing. The fact that these vehicles had a handbrake and no clutch was particularly beneficial to him because he had lost his left lower leg in a motorcycle accident while at high school . However, this did not prevent him from competing in other racing car classes.
Niday competed three times in the Indianapolis 500 mile race but was unable to place. He had a serious accident in the 1955 race. In third place, he touched the outer boundary wall of turn 2 on lap 170 and was thrown inward. The fact that he was the first racing driver to wear a full face helmet in Indianapolis may have helped to save him . When he woke up from a coma after several days, he decided to retire from racing. Since this race was also part of the drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960, the statistics at Niday show three Grand Prix starts.
Niday died in February 1988 of a heart attack in a classic car race after an accident.
