Callisia fragrans is a species of the genus Callisia inthe Commelina family (Commelinaceae). The specific epithet fragrans comes from Latin and means 'fragrant'.

Callisia fragrans is a robust perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. Flowering shoots are bromeliad-like, strong and covered with almost rosette-like leaves . They are sparsely branched. Long, rather slender, two-line leafed stolons arise from the lower nodes . The leaves of flowering shoots are up to 30 centimeters long and 7 centimeters wide. They are bright light green, narrowly elliptical-lanceolate, pointed, almost encompassing the stem and usually glabrous.

The spreading inflorescence consists of terminal panicles with crowded branches. The sitting, paired wraps are carried by paper bracts up to 2 centimeters long. The almost sessile, small flowers are fragrant. Their bristly sepals are 3.5 to 5 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide. The spread, lanceolate to egg-shaped, white petals do not have a flat blade. They are 5 to 6 millimeters long and 2.5 to 3.5 millimeters wide. The six long protruding, white stamens are more conspicuous than the petals. Your connectives are membranous. The scar is brush-shaped.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Systematics and distribution

Callisia fragrans is common in Mexico from Tamaulipas to Yucatán .

The first description as Spironema fragrans by John Lindley was published in 1758. Robert Everard Woodson placed the species in the genus Callisia in 1942 . A synonym is Rectanthera fragrans (Lindl.) O.Deg. (1932).

A cultivar with pale striped leaves is called 'Melnickoff'.
