Canada Day is a jazz album by Harris Eisenstadt . The recordings made on December 6, 2008 with his quintet of the same name in the studio Acoustic Recording , Brooklyn, were released in 2009 on Clean Feed Records .

background

Most of Eisenstadt's publications up until then were documentations of individual projects that remained ad hoc ensembles and which, despite their qualities, were never given the time to develop properly, said critic Troy Collins. Canada Day is the self-titled debut album by a quintet that the drummer founded in 2005 - here Eisenstadt developed a long-term ensemble for the first time. Eisenstadt's Canada Day was initially a quintet and, in addition to the band leader, consisted of Nate Wooley (trumpet), Matt Bauder (tenor saxophone), Chris Dingman (vibraphone) and Eivind Opsvik (bass).

Canada Day went through several transmutations over the years - to an octet (in which the original quintet was expanded to include the wind instruments Jason Mears , Ray Anderson and Dan Peck , heard on Canada Day Octet , 2012), a quartet (excluding Chris Dingman and his vibraphone) and a trio (during a tour of Russia), before Eisenstadt returned to the quintet in 2018 and documented on the live album Canada Day Quartet Live (2019), with Nate Wooley (trumpet), Alexander Hawkins (piano) and Pascal Niggenkemper ( Bass) returned to the smaller format.

reception

Michael G. Nastos awarded the album in Allmusic 4½ (of five) stars and said that the second recording, which was released in 2009 by Harris Eisenstadt, stand in stark contrast to his earlier work Guewel , the African from progressive, horn oriented treatments pop music consisted . Canada Day , on the other hand, is "a celebration of his home country, and as the Canadian goose indicates on the cover, the music symbolizes freedom, escape and artistry." Much more anchored in the modern jazz arena, the music reflects both neo-bop - as well as creative improvisational styles with a very talented quintet of young and experienced players. Eisenstadt proved to be a good drummer and excellent band leader on this recording. The cohesion of the ensemble, combined with the steady, steamy, flowing rhythms of Eisenstadt, keep the listener focused; Canada Day is an impressive studio date and a strong candidate for the top ten status in the category of the best jazz CDs of 2009, the author praises.

Nate: Wooley 2013 in Club W71 , Weikersheim.

In the opinion of Troy Collins, who gave the album a four (out of five) star rating in All About Jazz , Eisenstadt combines the blue note atmosphere from the mid-1960s “with elastic post-rock grooves and subtle West African grooves Influences "; In this way, he combines his various interests “successfully into a coherent ensemble sound.” With subtle variations of melody, harmony, rhythm and texture, he summarizes the vastness of Canada in every piece that is dedicated to his home country. “Matt Bauder and Nate Wooley showed themselves to be dynamic performers with a preference for the outer sound areas. Bauder's multiphone glitter on “Halifax” and Wooley's sparkling half-valve smears on the angular “After an Outdoor Bath” cross the boundaries of tonality without giving up the basic melody or harmony. Although no musician dominates the scene, Wooley's subdued discourse on “Don't Gild the Lilly” is a tour de force of controlled abstraction. A formidable master of texture manipulation, he joins Taylor Ho Bynum , Peter Evans and Rob Mazurek as yet another notable student of legendary trumpeter Bill Dixon . “ Canada Day is an easily accessible mix of inner and outer traditions, delivered by a sensitive young ensemble sums up the author. It is "a welcome addition to the burgeoning discography of one of the leading composers of the new generation."
