action

prince

A young prince rides his entourage through a snowy landscape. After a long journey he is approaching home when he is surprised to see a forest in front of him that he does not know and that no map shows. A rider warns him. The forest is known as the magic forest. But the young man asks to explore the place. He rides alone. He sings the song Where am I going . Here he realizes that he is looking for his unknown love. In the middle of the winter forest he suddenly stands in front of a snow-covered glass coffin. As he removes the snow he sees the most beautiful girl's face in the coffin. But then he hears a noise. He hides and seven dwarfs appear. And after some back and forth they become known and the dwarfs tell the story of the beautiful in the glass coffin:

Snow White's mother

It's snowing. A beautiful queen is expecting a child. And she wants a child of archetypal beauty: the lips as red as blood, the skin as white as snow and the hair as black as ebony. She happily folds cloths with her ladies-in-waiting and they sing and dance to the song: Let it snow . The king and his wife approach the event with joy. Snow White is born. When the king proclaims happiness to his people, he has to hurry to his wife. She dies and gives the child the name: Snow White.

The little girl

A happy little girl has become Snow White. She dances gracefully through the castle and sings to her father's music game Hoppin 'on My Daddy's Knee . A redhead comes in - splendidly dressed. It is the king's second wife. She smiles at the father-daughter idyll and urges you to hurry. You still have a reception. She coldly wishes Snow White good night. The little girl sadly asks the father for the right mother. With the doll in her arms, Snow White is put to bed by the king. But curiously, the girl pats off again. Then she sees her stepmother through the keyhole. She speaks to a magic mirror. Snow White is hiding, and when the Queen is gone, Snow White also speaks to the mirror the magic words she has just heard. The mirror laughs at the little one. Horrified, the child flees and hides under the covers.

hunt

The next morning we go hunting. The little one happily wakes her father. The queen enviously sees the king's love for his beautiful daughter. The evil one takes the opportunity and hires a hunter. He is supposed to secretly kill Snow White during the hunt. Thinking about this, the evil queen sings More Beautiful Than Me . The hunter knows how to lure the little girl into solitude, but when he tries to carry out the wicked plan, the little girl escapes. Snow White promises never to return to her father. The hunter takes pity and lets the little one go. Desperate about the loss of his child, the king dies. Snow White runs through the wild forest, falls through piles of leaves and tears her clothes. The little one finally comes to a gnarled house. It is empty. And the hungry child jumps through the hut with the exuberant The Bed song and nibbles on the food she finds.

The seven Dwarves

When the dwarfs return home in the evening, they wonder about the disorder. But they don't find the little one until the next day. When Snow White tells of her fate, the dwarfs decide to keep the girl with them. And in a happy song, Iddy Biddy-Names , they teach the confused child their seven names: Iddy, Biddy, Liddy, Diddy, Kiddy, Fiddy and Giddy.

Poison

Snow White has grown into a picture of a girl among the dwarfs. The beautiful woman gracefully takes care of the dwarf household and sings the Every Day song . But then the wicked stepmother finds out from her speaking mirror that and where Snow White lives - because the mirror answers the question about the most beautiful one with: Snow White with the seven dwarfs above the seven mountains . The envious one cannot and will not endure that. Disguised, she sets off and sells Snow White a bodice and tries to lace her to death with it. The dwarfs find the girl and can help. The next day, this time disguised as a Chinese woman, the stepmother Snow White sells a poisonous comb. This time too the dwarves save. But then she draws on all of her magical powers. With the demonic song Lovely Hair she invents evil: And with a poisonous apple - white and red - she succeeds in poisoning the beautiful Snow White. But since the girl is so beautiful, the dwarfs cannot separate and bed Snow White in the glass coffin - guarded by the dwarfs and the animals of the forest. So much for the dwarfs to tell the shaken prince.

encounter

At the prince's pleading, the dwarfs give him the beautiful girl in the glass coffin. He wants to bring Snow White to his castle. A snowstorm breaks out. The coffin falls from the carriage. As a result of the impact, the poisoned piece of apple flies out of Snow White's mouth and she wakes up. The prince and Snow White fall in love. The wedding is announced. Meanwhile, the wicked queen is preparing for the festival of the year: the prince's upcoming wedding. But the mirror explains to the wicked that it is not she herself, but the young queen who is the most beautiful. In anger, the witch smashes the mirror. When she tries to appear at the wedding, the witch ages with every step of years. Nevertheless, the Evil One and the Bride Snow White recognize each other immediately. Everyone watches in horror as envy consumes itself to ashes. The prince happily embraces his beauty, freed from the dire threat.

backgrounds

The film is very differentiated and steeped in tradition, especially on the visual level. When little Snow White falls asleep as tired as goldilocks after her bed song in the dwarf's hut , the next morning the dwarfs find it in the manner of the Snow White picture by Arthur Rackham .

The loving mother of Snow White seems to be based on the image of a young woman by William Morris in physiognomy and clothing (see picture on the side). The costumes of the film are stylishly based on the images of the Pre-Raphaelites . The castle stands on a wooded mountain height - similar to Neuschwanstein Castle . Inside and outside, the architecture is neo-Gothic. The pictorial harmony of the Snow White world contrasts with the self-portrayal of the stepmother, where the neo-Gothic three - passports and shamrocks are poisoned with poppy acrylic paints and neon lights to inflated pomp. The musical music in this film appears paler than the film images. The songs combine the timeless Snow White fabric with a superficial fashionable soundscape. However, through the musical effects, the cryptic content of the Snow White fairy tale is softened into a lovely childish quality and thus brings this material into a form that is commensurate for small children. The musical form brings the Snow White film atmospherically closer to Mary Poppins and is also part of the film music tradition of Disney's cartoon Snow White . The love of Snow White and the Prince is love at first sight and is neither in the film nor in the Brothers Grimm psychologically explored through history or explanation. The film describes the stepmother's need for recognition in great detail. Especially at the end of the film, the gaze is fixed on all the details of the bad guys, while the relief on the part of Snow White and the prince seems very shortened. The happiness of liberation is articulated, but appears somewhat stifled in the family idyll of the prince wedding. The liberation from the stepmother, who after all has Snow White's childhood, her father and almost Snow White's life on her conscience, could be staged in a more magical, happier, freer and more radiant manner.

synchronization

The German dubbed version of Snow White is available on DVD under the title Schneewittchen - as is the French dubbed version under the title Blanche Neige . Unfortunately, there are no references to the origin and the speakers of these dubbed versions either on the German TV broadcasts or on the DVD.

For this and other Cannon Movie Tales films there are also excellent German dubbing of the television of the GDR at the time.

Reviews

  • “Musical staging about the fairy tale of the beautiful princess Snow White, who finds refuge with the seven dwarfs while fleeing from her evil stepmother. Children's film as part of a series of fairy tale adaptations by the Yoram Globus production, only a small part of which was shown in our cinemas. Concentrating on the outside, the film is thoroughly entertaining without being really convincing. ” Lexicon of international film

  5. Snow White's good female role in this family idyll is also absurd. After all, Snow White is a border crosser like Persephone , who even in a certain way overcomes death in a glass coffin.
