Canora is a small town (town) in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan . In 2011 it had 2219 inhabitants. The name is an acronym from the first two letters of each word of Ca Nadian No rthern Ra ilway , a railway company , who worked in the founding years of the city in the area.
location
Canora is located in eastern Saskatchewan, approximately 50 km from the Manitoba border. The next larger town is Yorkton , which is about 50 km south. The area is dominated by water, for example the Whitesand River flows a few kilometers east , while Good Spirit Lake is located in the southwest . In the Saskatchewan political division, Canora belongs to the Census Division No. 9 . It is also the center of the county- like Rural Municipality of Good Lake No. 274 , which in addition to the city also includes some hamlets .
history
The area around Canora was first populated in the late 19th century, mainly by settlers of Eastern European origin. In 2011, 385 residents stated Russian or Ukrainian as their mother tongue . In religious terms, the Duchoborzen made up a larger proportion of the settlers. In 1905 the community of Canora was founded, the name going back to the Canadian Northern Railway , which had built a railway line and a small train station in the area a year earlier. In 1910, the church received the status of Town .
The town had its highest population so far in 1966 with 2,734, although the number has increased by 10.2% in the more recent past, from 2006 to 2011.

Canora has in addition to various shops a primary school (Elementary School) , a high school , an ice rink , a golf club and an aerodrome (Canora Airport) , which, however, consists of no more than a grass runway.
