Carl Vilhelm Oluf Peter Aarsleff (born August 14, 1852 in Nyborg , † January 4, 1918 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish sculptor .

Life

Carl Aarsleff was a son of Niels Theodor Aarsleff (1826–1908), with whom he learned wood turning, and the Arnoldine Marie Sophie Jensen (1829–1875). He went to Copenhagen at the beginning of the 1870s, trained at the Technical Institute there and from 1872 to 1876 attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art under Jens Adolf Jerichau . At the same time he worked as a carver for V. Fieldskov in 1872/73. He also worked as a modeller for the Wendrich terracotta factory and as a marble sculptor in Theobald Stein's studio . He also carried out decorative work for Frederiksborg Castle . Aarsleff received a scholarship from the art academy for a trip abroad in order to pursue further studies there. On October 4, 1893, he married Ingeborg Andrea Rump (1859-1897) in Copenhagen. He spent the winters of 1893/94 and 1894/95 in Italy again.

In 1890 Aarsleff became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Art and was then one of its councilors from 1890 to 1899. From 1901 he taught as a professor of sculpture at the art academy, headed its school board from 1906 and finally acted as its director from 1914 to 1917. From 1899 to 1901 he also sat on the exhibition committee of Charlottenborg Palace .

Aarsleff created statues, reliefs and statuettes that reveal the influence of his teacher Jerichau. He was also influenced by Bertel Thorvaldsen , but showed a greater tendency towards naturalistic solutions using antique elements. He also carried out decorative work for some large architectural projects. For the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek he produced the work The Found Erotes in 1887 , and also designed two reliefs for the facade of this Glyptotek . In the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen there are statues made by Aarsleff, such as Abel (1893), David (1896) and A Young Florentine (1899), as well as the fine statuette A Young Man (1889). In addition, the artist designed two reliefs on the facade of the art museum, namely an Eos bringing light and a Daidalos . The Hirschsprung Collection houses the bronze statuette Aarsleff completed in 1895, a little centaur playing with its tail . Aarsleff created the altar cross for the Saxogade church and six guards for the main facade of the Copenhagen City Hall. From 1900 to 1912 he also restored the sarcophagus of Queen Margaret I in Roskilde Cathedral . 77 of his original works were donated to the Nyborg Museum after his death in early 1918 at the age of 65.
