Carl Albrecht Delius

Carl Albrecht Delius (born September 6, 1827 in Bielefeld ; † March 29, 1915 there ) was a Bielefeld silk goods manufacturer. He founded the silk weaving mill CA Delius und Sons and, as the Prussian secret councilor, belonged to the leading stratum of the Bielefeld economic bourgeoisie.

Delius came from a linen dealer family in Bielefeld. He was the son of Gottfried Delius and Sophie Emilie Bertelsmann. He attended the Royal High School until the end of secondary school. At the age of 16 he started an apprenticeship at EA Delius. He attended the royal trade schools in Hagen and Elberfeld . In 1845 he became an apprentice at the silk company Leonhard Küppers in Krefeld and attended the higher weaving schools in Krefeld, Lyon and Zurich . Visits to Málaga and business trips to Europe followed .

In 1853, Carl Albrecht Delius became a partner in the linen company E. A. Delius & Sons , founded by Johann Caspar Delius in 1722 , which had also been manufacturing silk goods since 1845. He was a member of the supervisory board of Friedrich-Wilhelms-Bleiche zu Bielefeld and the Ravensberger Spinnerei , and participated in various foundings of the Bielefeld industry. On July 1, 1887, Carl Albrecht Delius founded the company C. A. Delius & Sons with his sons Paul and Erich . On December 12, 1896, Carl Albrecht Delius received the title of " Kommerzienrat " for his services in the economic field and on November 30, 1903 the title of "Secret Commerce Councilor".

Carl Albrecht Delius founded the Bielefeld gymnastics community on April 14, 1848 , was its chairman for 33 years, then honorary chairman and chairman of the Westphalian Turngau region. In 1860 he founded the Turner fire department , the first fire department in Bielefeld . From 1861 to 1905 he was a city councilor for the National Liberal Party . At the end of August 1865 he co-founded the von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel near Bielefeld. From 1863 until his death he was presbyter of the Old Town congregation. In addition, he was head of the poor district. In 1908 he received the large silver city commemorative coin. Two years before his death, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd Class with Ribbon. After him, part of Wertherstrasse in Bielefeld was named "Albrecht-Delius-Weg" in 1924. The mourning bell of the old town Nicolaikirche bears his name.

In 1864, Carl Albrecht Delius and the Berlin architect Bückemann built the house at Wertherstrasse 1a, which was later renamed Albrecht-Delius-Weg 4. The old part of Babelsberg Castle, with its English Gothic style , served as a model . It was called the Villa Delius. However, the house was destroyed by fire bombs in 1944.

In 1914 Carl Albrecht celebrated a diamond wedding with Lina Delius, whom he married on August 18, 1854 in Bielefeld . The year before, he had celebrated his 70th anniversary in business. Carl Albrecht died 20 days after his wife, leaving behind six children, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
