Karl Friedrich Gärtner , from 1846 by Gärtner , also Carl Friedrich and also as a Gaertner , (born May 1, 1772 in Göppingen , † September 1, 1850 in Calw ) was a German botanist and doctor . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " CFGaertn. "; earlier the abbreviation “ Gaertn.f. " in use.

Life

Karl Friedrich was born the son of the important botanist Joseph Gärtner , who had just returned from a position as director of the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg . He studied medicine in Jena , Göttingen and Tübingen and established himself as a general practitioner in Calw in 1796. From 1800 onwards he devoted himself to botany and in particular to the sexuality of plants. In 1802 he went on a one-year trip to France, England and the Netherlands . From around 1824 he investigated the hybridization of plants. Gärtner's basic research influenced both Charles Darwin with his theory of evolution and Mendel's theory of heredity. In Darwin's The Origin of Species , Gärtner is one of the most cited naturalists.

In 1826 he was appointed a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and in 1846 he was ennobled ( Knight of the Order of the Württemberg Crown ). In 1849 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Netherlands .

He took care of the publication of the supplement to the main work of his father De fructibus et seminibus plantarum and wrote his own botanical treatises.

family

He married Christiane Sybille Wagner (* 1785) in Calw in 1803, a daughter of the merchant and mayor Ernst Fridrich Wagner and Eva Sabina Zahn . The couple had two sons and eight daughters, but the sons died young. Of the daughters, Maria Therese (1801–1846) married finance counselor Friedrich Schmoller (1795–1865), they became the parents of the economist Gustav von Schmoller .
