Carl Johann Gustav Hartlaub (born November 8, 1814 in Bremen ; † November 29, 1900 in Bremen) was a German doctor and ornithologist .

Life

After studying in Bonn , where he joined the Corps Guestphalia in 1837 , Berlin and Göttingen , Hartlaub obtained his doctorate in 1838. On his subsequent travels he began collecting and researching exotic birds from 1840 , which he bequeathed to the Museum of the Natural History Society in Bremen . As early as 1844, the collection comprised around 2000 copies. Hartlaub was the first to describe some bird species. In 1852 Hartlaub founded the Journal for Ornithology together with his assistant Jean Louis Cabanis , which is still the leading German-language journal in its field. In 1857 Hartlaub was elected a member of the Leopoldina.

In 1857, after a trip to Africa , Hartlaub published his main work System der Ornithologie Westafrica’s , in which he describes 758 bird species. In 1860 a systematic review of the birds of Madagascar follows . He finally supported Friedrich Hermann Otto Finsch (1839–1917) with a work on the bird life of Polynesia .

On June 9, 1844, Hartlaub married Caroline Stachow in Bremen.
