Carl Ludwig August von Benning

Carl Ludwig August von Benning (born January 17, 1776 in Kassel ; † April 28, 1829 there ) was a German officer.

Life

Carl Ludwig August von Benning was born as the son of Lieutenant General Ferdinand Ludwig von Benning (* 1737; † 1800 in Kassel). His brother Friedrich (* unknown; † 1809 in Korbach ) was a Westphalian captain.

In April 1784 he came to the court of Landgrave Friedrich II as a page . In 1792 he was promoted to ensign in the "Life Guard" regiment. He took part in the campaign against France and was involved in the reconquest of Frankfurt am Main on December 2, 1792, on the occasion of which the Hessendenkmal was erected.

In 1806 he was staff captain in the "Guard" regiment and in March 1808 he joined the 3rd Westphalian Line Regiment as a grenadier captain . In the same year he was transferred to the hunters of the guard in October and took part in the campaign against Austria during the Fifth Coalition War in 1809 . In 1810 he became battalion commander in the 8th Line Regiment and in 1811 he was promoted to major . In August 1812, he was given command of a mobile column and in December 1812, he became the fusiliers of the guard added. In May 1813 he was promoted to colonel . As such, he led the fusilier guard in the campaign and was involved in the battles of Hochkirch during the Battle of Bautzen .

In October 1813 he was recalled to the Kingdom of Westphalia after the corps had been disbanded and partially incorporated into the French Guard. After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in the winter of 1813, he offered his services to Prince Wilhelm I again and was reinstated in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as the commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment "Elector" . He led the regiment he had formed with the army corps under the command of the future Elector Wilhelm II to France and took part in the blockade of Thionville and Metz in March 1814 and in the sieges of Sedan , Mezieres and Givet in the summer of 1815 .

In 1816 he was appointed colonel.
