Carl Noack , Sorbian Karlo Nowak (born November 28, 1873 in Lieske , Calau district , † April 24, 1959 in Benthe , Hanover district ), was a German - Sorbian painter .

life and work

Carl Noack was born in Lieske on November 28, 1873 as the son of a teacher and cantor . He spent his childhood in Schwarzkollm near Hoyerswerda . From 1885 to 1892 he attended high schools in Charlottenburg and Bunzlau , after which he studied at the teachers' college in Altdöbern .

From 1895 to 1898 he worked as a high school teacher in Groß Teuplitz in the Sorau district . It was only at the age of 25 that he began studying art in Berlin in 1898 . Later he continued his studies in Kassel . He first came to Crossen an der Oder as a drawing teacher in 1902 and then worked for over 30 years at the state high school in Cottbus . This is also where his main artistic work was created, which mainly consists of landscape watercolors. Noack's pictures do not follow common clichés. He didn't like the fashion trends of his time, such as Expressionism or Surrealism, as well as the worn-out motifs of Spreewald painting .

In 1916 Carl Noack became chairman of the Cottbus artists' association. In 1950 he came into contact with the working group of Sorbian artists. A little later he came into conflict with GDR cultural officials. His pictures did not correspond to socialist realism . In 1954, he and Conrad Felixmüller (with whom he had a close friendship) resigned in protest against Fritz Lattke's exclusion (because of “civil decadence”) from the circle of Sorbian visual artists .

Disappointed with the post-war development, he left the GDR and moved to Lower Saxony . Carl Noack died on April 24, 1959 in Benthe.
