Carl Stephann
Carl Stephann (born May 15, 1842 in Vienna ; † November 11, 1919 there ) was an Austrian architect .
Life
Carl Stephann was the son of the police officer Johann Stephan and came from a very simple background. After the father died early, the mother had to raise her six children alone. Nevertheless, Carl was able to attend secondary school (exempt from school fees) . From 1861 to 1865 he graduated from the Technical University and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master school with Eduard van der Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburg .
After completing his studies, Stephann did practical years with Johann Romano vonringen and August Schwendenwein von Lanauberg and from 1868 to 1873 with Friedrich Schachner . From 1873 he worked as a freelance architect. Here he was very successful, so that he was able to employ several architects. Sometimes he also acted as his own builder. He was a co-owner of several businesses, such as sawmills and gravel pits. He was able to acquire a larger property in St. Andrä-Wölker .
Stephan had been married to Marie Sonnleitner since 1869 and had eleven children with her. One of his daughters was married to the architect August Belohlavek, who was also his partner for several years. Carl Stephann probably died at the age of 77 as a result of the Spanish flu .
plant
Carl Stephann was one of the most successful architects of the later Ringstrasse era. He was able to erect around 200 buildings, mainly residential buildings for both high demands and simple suburban houses. Stephann began stylistically in Historicism with the Neo-Renaissance , but then turned to the old German style. At the turn of the century, Stephann was also open to Secessionism . In the years before the First World War , he turned to neoclassicism .
Stephann's best-known building project was the Colosseum entertainment establishment.
