Carpinteros is a drama film by Dominican director José María Cabral , which premiered on January 23, 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film tells of a love story in Najayo Prison in the Dominican Republic, in which the two inmates Julián and Yanelly try to have a relationship over a distance of 150 meters using sign language without the guards discovering it.

action

Julian is taken by bus to Najayo Prison in the Dominican Republic, where the tall and handsome man is serving a prison sentence. There, Julian is housed in a damp cell in the men's wing, very close to a lattice window through which his fellow prisoners, the carpinteros, watch the female prisoners in the neighboring facility, with whom they try to maintain contact from a great distance. One day he discovers a woman in the women's prison, which is just in sight, 150 meters from the men's prison, in whom he is immediately interested. Julián and Yanelly, as the young woman is called, try to build a relationship with the help of the sign language developed by the prisoners without being discovered by the guards. Julian hadn't believed that he had found his love in this very place that he always dreamed of. Yanelly becomes his purpose in life, and without even having met or even touched each other, he nevertheless experiences a certain intimacy with her.

Bar and film title

The prisoners in the Dominican prisons are called carpinteros , which translated means woodpeckers

The direction was taken over by José María Cabral , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Other prominent members of the Dominican Cabral family to whom he is related includes Donald Reid Cabral , the former President of the Dominican Republic. Born in Santo Domingo in 1988, the director began making films at the age of 16. In 2012 his film was Jaque Mate! published, which was submitted as a Dominican entry for Best Foreign Language Film for an Oscar. Here he is already working with Hernan Herrera , who also acted as cameraman for Carpinteros again.

The word Carpinteros with which the prisoners are referred to in the Dominican prisons, says in Spanish woodpeckers , (but also carpenters and wood carvers), sign language itself is in the English translation as Woodpecking referred, which explains the English title of the film. The director explains the communication between the prisoners depicted in his film , through a sign language developed by them through barred windows, this is referred to as "allowing bana", which means "tolerated example / ensnaring". This makes it possible for the male prisoners in Najayo prison, according to Cabral, to come into contact with inmates of the neighboring women's prison and to build relationships and to experience a certain intimacy even without touching them, without even knowing each other.

There are two large prisons in Santo Domingo , Najayo Mujeres en San Cristóbal and Najayo hombres, which are located in close proximity to each other on Carretera Najayo Arriba. Cabral visited Najayo Prison daily during the nine months he was developing the script. In an interview with Variety , Cabral said of his film and the shooting: “I wanted to depict reality. Because of this, many of the actors were real prisoners, and many of the prison officers actually work in the prison system. "

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 77 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Trevor Groth, director of programming at Sundance Film Festival, was impressed by the backstory of the film and said, “He [the director] was shooting the film in a prison that was really operating at the time. He stayed there for nine months and found almost all the actors for the film among the prisoners and the guards and shot an incredible film with a fictional story on location. "

Sarah Ward of screendaily.com explains that the film combines visual storytelling with immersive emotionality, and that it is hypnotic beauty when you watch the characters in the film secretly send messages through bars and fences. Even if the film seems like a romance, the film never forgets the limited possibilities that arise from the location, says Ward.
