criticism

Pig wasteland

In the author's debut volume, which deals with East-West sensitivities in the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the hero of the novel pays homage to “a morbid Ostalgie with the cynical weapons of the West,” according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . As a parasite, this neo-romantic good-for-nothing nestles in a dilapidated old apartment in order to draw new spirits from the 'ghost world' of the former GDR. " Unfortunately - and this brings the reviewer to criticism - Kuballa is not only a badly crazy protagonist, but also the narrator of his story, and as such unsuitable: the surveillance logs of himself and others make reading it a tedious affair. The German Press Agency writes on the day of publication: “In the search for and search for the past, a brilliant balancing act.” The Leipziger Volkszeitung sees a “turnaround novel that stands out from the usual reports and confessions about the difficulties of growing together East and West West.".

Gentle illusions

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Otte's second novel, Gentle Illusions , presents a “web-like interweaving” of CVs that are located in Baden-Baden : “What emerges in this way is a nasty, sarcastic, but sometimes also moving picture of a spa town that always wants to shine more than it is, and behind its shiny surface there are many abysses. Baden-Baden also repeatedly turns into the image of the whole country, on which the future of an aging, child-hostile society with its strong contrasts between rich and poor is concentrated like in a burning mirror. ”The reviewer of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung is, however, annoyed by the fact that the author loads his story with too many topics and problems. The Hamburger Abendblatt believes it has a “merciless view of the bourgeoisie and pseudo-bohemian”. The reviewer of the Süddeutsche Zeitung had a great time reading it. In his eyes, the author succeeds wonderfully in capturing the spa town atmosphere of Baden-Baden. However, the author sometimes seems to apply too thick to it.

Goodbye car

According to taz , Otte wrote “ Goodbye Auto ”, “a swan song for the automobile that actually deserves a scrapping bonus.” The NDR Kultur radio program explains: “In 60 amusing and self-deprecating memories, Carsten Otte tells of his life without a driver's license; of angry parking lot hooligans, speechless car salespeople and seductive holiday flirtations - who finally got him to get behind the wheel for once in a lifetime. At the same time, Otte also sharpens the eye for the bizarre things of the automotive world: such as abandoned parking garage deserts or oversized off-road vehicles that are supposed to be given the appearance of living up to their name with mud from the spray can. It's a car biography in which the car still plays an important role - at no point does it have an instructive effect, but rather admits the desire to drive. ”The Saarbrücker Zeitung asks:“ Is Otte a fanatic? Definitely not. Just someone who thinks about the car phenomenon and its impact on life and the environment. "
