Casey Roberts

Edwin Casey Roberts (born May 9, 1901 in Illinois , † May 29, 1949 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , art director and production designer who was nominated three times for the Oscar for best production design.

Life

Roberts, who appeared in the silent film Jilted in Jail as a young actor in 1917 , began his career as an art director and production designer in the Hollywood film industry in the mid-1920s . After Die Kamelliendame (1926) he worked on the stage sets for around thirty films until shortly before his death.

At the Academy Awards in 1943 he was nominated twice for the Oscar for best production design: on the one hand with Ted Smith for the color film Helden der Lüfte (1942), a war film directed by Michael Curtiz with James Cagney , Dennis Morgan and Brenda Marshall , on the other hand along with Max Parker and Mark-Lee Kirk for the black and white film Our sweet home ( George Washington Slept Here , 1942), one directed by William Keighley resulting film comedy with Jack Benny , Ann Sheridan and Charles Coburn in the lead roles. His third Oscar nomination in this category got Roberts in 1949 together with Richard Day and Joseph Kish for the color film Joan of Arc (1948), in which Ingrid Bergman and directed by Victor Fleming alongside Francis L. Sullivan and J. Carrol Naish the Title role played by Joan of Arc .
