Catavi is a country town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean highlands of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The mine settlement Catavi is a central place of Canton Llallagua district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Llallagua in the province Rafael Bustillo . The city is located at an altitude of 3777  m ten kilometers north of the provincial capital Uncia and 300 kilometers south of the Bolivian seat of government La Paz .

Catavi lies at the transition from the Oruro highlands to the Potosí mountains. The city is bordered in the north and west by the high mountain ranges of the Cordillera Central . In Machacamarquita, Ruta 6 branches off in a south-easterly direction and reaches the city of Llallagua via Huanuni and over pass heights of more than 4,500 m after 79 kilometers , and from there it is another four kilometers to Catavi.

From Llallagua, the route 6 leads another 98 kilometers via Uncía to Macha . The Catavi tin mines were among the largest and richest ore deposits in the world, but the mining complex has been closed since 1987.
