Catch Without Arms is a music album by dredg released on June 21, 2005 .
Basic concept
Like the other dredg albums, Catch Without Arms is a concept album . The theme of the album are contrasts or opposites . This can be seen on the one hand in the music that oscillates between hard and soft and on the other hand in the lyrics, which are printed for the first time on an album by dredg. So the entire album is divided into two halves ( Perspective One and Perspective Two ), which, according to the singer Gavin Hayes, balance each other out in order to get a balance again in the end . When asked how the lyrics were approached, he replied, “The entire underlying basis of the lyrics and the music are opposites, contrasts… I had written a few lyrics that were about conversation and argument, so we came up with one two contrasting halves of the album. The entire basis of the album could be based on objections to ideas and contrasts. ” (Original: “ The whole underlying basis of the lyrics and the music is opposites, contrasts… I'd written some lyrics that are based around conversations or arguments, so we thought about a record with two halves that contrast each other. The whole basis of the record could be about objection to ideas, and contrast. " )

Track information
Perspective One
Ode to the Sun
The lyrics deal with a sarcastic discussion between worshipers and adored ones. Parts of the text are based on a car accident that Hayes witnessed.
Bug eyes
The song is about a journey through Hayes' life. As if through the compound eyes of a beetle , the narrator sees his life from birth to death from many different perspectives.
Catch Without Arms
- being rich and famous against endangering art and intactness as well
- catch something against armless
Catch Without Arms is about the way Hayes sees himself and the band through an artistic prism . Part of the inspiration to write texts like “sing about love, sing about lust… so they will care… that's what happens when you compromise your art” was, according to him, “the expectation of what I think what I need so that people can interested in a song instead of just writing what makes me happy. One always has this underlying concern in mind - will people enjoy that? We want to make ourselves happy, but it's not just about writing a good song, it's about the ability to connect with other people in some way. This song was probably the most truthful thing I have written in a long time. ” (Original: “ The expectation, what I feel I need to do to make people care about a song, rather than just writing for what makes me happy. You always have this underlying worry in your head - are people going to enjoy this? We want to make ourselves happy, but it's not only about writing a good song, it's being able to connect with people in some manner. That one was probably the most literal thing I've written in a long time. ” )
Not that simple
- broken versus unbreakable
It's about the turmoil of life, love and everything that surrounds us.
Zebra skin
- white stripes against black stripes as well
- Sobriety versus addiction / addiction as well
- Love versus obsession
The text deals with alcohol addiction and the price one has to pay for it, primarily in the social field.
According to Hayes, this song is not only about addictions to alcohol, but also about addictions in relationships . One should “question the point at which a relationship turns from a real, emotional connection to a security blanket ” (Original: “questions the point where a relationship turns from a true emotional connection to a security blanket.” )
The Tanbark Is Hot Lava
- new against old
The tree bark used for tanning is called Tanbark ( German : Gerberlohe ) .
"The tanbark is hot lava" is a game often played by children, in which you walk on a sidewalk and try not to step on the cracks in the stone slabs.
The song is about the ups and downs in a relationship. The "back and forth", positive and negative, changes and retention, etc.
Sang real
- Sobriety versus addiction as well
- many friends against loneliness as well
- Depth versus surface
Sang Real is another name for the Holy Grail ( Sangreal ≈ Saint Graal ≈ Holy Grail ), the vessel from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper and into which his blood flowed when Jesus was crucified . In the Middle Ages, the knights of the Round Table went in search of the Grail, as it apparently creates harmony (especially between men and women) and ultimately leads to God by achieving harmony .
Another theme of the song is depth, i.e. H. what one keeps hidden deep within oneself (thoughts, dreams, etc.) versus what one shows on the surface (actions, what is said, etc.).
Perspective Two
Planting Seeds
- Beauty versus destruction as well
- Shells against cartridge cases
The two stanzas of the song tell the same situation, but from the point of view of two different people. The refrain acts as a link between the two perspectives. The line of text “A sea shell in a sea of shells” describes something ugly (the sea of cartridge cases) or something beautiful (the shell in the middle of the cartridge cases), depending on the perspective.
Spitshine
- gain in prestige versus lose prestige
Spitshine describes (in the military sector) the polishing of rifles and shoes in order to achieve a more beautiful appearance.
Jamais Vu
Hayes described the content as “ it's about dying, so don't die. Or die. It is natural. I think death is wonderful. There is a tribe in Africa that laughs at death. When someone dies, they sit around the corpse and laugh. "(Original:" That's about dying, so don't die. Or do so, It's a natural thing, right. I think death is beautiful. There is a tribe in Africa that laughs at death. When someone dies they sit around the body and all laugh at it. ")
Hungover on a Tuesday
- being happy versus being addicted and feeling bad
It's about ending and the pain of giving up something, in this case an addiction. Although the addiction makes you feel good, you have to end the situation. In this case, the addiction can come from drugs, but also from love or hate.
The song is an argument between the addict and the addiction.
Matroshka (The Ornament)
- one large doll against many small dolls
- being inside a protective shell versus being outside a protective shell
- the whole against a single object
The song is about the Russian dolls called Matryoshka . Hayes said of the song, “ I thought this was a good visual representation of the universe, the proportions of things, and how you perceive them. "(Original:" I thought that was a great visual for our whole universe, the scale of things and how you perceive scale. ")
Bonus Track: Uplifting News
The song Uplifting News is a B-side that dredg originally wanted to publish elsewhere, but not on the regular album or on a single. The German record company, however, added the song to the album, which dredg really disliked, as it destroyed the concept devised by the band in terms of content and did not fit into the album musically either. After the gentle matroshka, the rocky Uplifting News seems out of place .
