Cay Lorenz (since 1838) Count von Brockdorff (born January 26, 1766 on the Klein Nordsee manor ; † May 18, 1840 in Hamburg ) was a Danish-Schleswig-Holstein lawyer and statesman. He was the last Danish chancellor in Schleswig-Holstein and in some cases also president of the higher courts in this country.

Life

Cay Lorenz Graf von Brockdorff came from the Brockdorff family , one of the old noble families of Holstein , which has been documented there since the 14th century. He studied law at a very young age at the Universities of Kiel and Göttingen and absorbed influences from both Adolf Friedrich Trendelenburg in Kiel and from the Göttingen constitutional lawyer Johann Stephan Pütter . After completing his studies, he became an auscultant at the higher court for Schleswig in Gottorf . At this time he published the Corpus Statutorum Slesvicensium together with Christian von Eggers, who later became President of Kiel , a collection of valid, but also historical, legal bases and laws of the Duchy of Schleswig . In 1789 he became a councilor at the higher court in Schleswig and in 1795 a member of the German chancellery in Copenhagen . Brockdorff was named Chancellor for Schleswig-Holstein as early as 1802 . He presided over the law firm in Glückstadt and the higher court there for Schleswig-Holstein for 32 years. The Brockdorff-Palais there still reminds of this time. From 1819 to 1834 he was a curator at the University of Kiel . With the establishment of the Higher Appeal Court for the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg in 1834 in Kiel , he became its first president.

On March 30, 1838 Cay Lorenz von Brockdorff was raised to the hereditary Danish count status in Copenhagen . In 1839 he became a Knight of the Elephant Order .
