Christian Ulrich Detlev von Eggers , from 1806 Freiherr von Eggers (born May 11, 1758 in Itzehoe ; † November 21, 1813 in Kiel ), was a politician and statesman, camerawoman , Danish - Holstein civil servant and chief president of the city of Kiel.

family

He came from a Hamburg family, the direct line of which begins with the glazier Henning Eggers , since 1619 a citizen of Hamburg. Christian's father Hinrich Friedrich Eggers , royal Danish conference councilor and Vice Chancellor of Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) , was raised to the imperial nobility on January 3, 1790 in Vienna . He married Joh. Ernestine (1773–97) in Copenhagen in 1790. Her father was Balthasar Münter and her sister Friederike Brun . After the death of his wife he married Antoinette Frieder in 1799 in Copenhagen. de Bang (1774-1851).

On April 21, 1806, Christian von Eggers was elevated to the status of imperial baron as royal Danish state councilor and chief procurator at the German chancellery in Vienna .

Life

Eggers studied law and political science at the universities of Kiel , Leipzig , Halle and Göttingen from 1776 to 1783 and then entered the Danish civil service in Copenhagen . In 1785 he was appointed professor of camera science and in 1788 professor of law. In addition, he was called upon to work in financial commissions and represented Denmark as Legation Councilor at the Rastatt Congress from 1797–1798 .

Eggers writes about this:

“From December 9, 1797 to April 23, 1799, a peace congress was held here in accordance with the Peace of Campo Formio to order German imperial affairs and to compensate the imperial princes who lost their territories to the left of the Rhine. The whole fruitless negotiation presented the pitiful spectacle of German discord alongside French arrogance. Austria, which in the meantime had formed a new coalition against France with Russia and England, finally dissolved the Congress. "

Eggers was favored by Minister Andreas Peter von Bernstorff , whose views he shared and to whom he paid deep admiration. In his spirit, he worked for humane reforms and, in particular, promoted the abolition of serfdom in Schleswig-Holstein, of which he was appointed chief procurator in 1801.

He also made an outstanding contribution to the criminal legislation and penal institutions in the duchies. Because of his efforts to reform Austrian legislation in 1806, he was raised to the baron status and in 1813, a few months before his death, was appointed President of the City of Kiel.
