Charles Spencer Denman, 5th Baron Denman CBE MC TD (born July 7, 1916 in Penrith , † November 21, 2012 in Highden , West Sussex ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

Family and military service

Denman was born as the eldest son of Sir Richard Douglas Denman, 1st Baronet (1876-1957) and his wife Mary Radley Spencer († 1974). Charles Denham inherited on the death of his father on December 22, 1957 his title as 2nd Baronet , of Staffield in the County Cumberland. In March 1971 he also inherited the title of 5th Baron Denman , of Dovedale in County of Derby, from his cousin Thomas Denman, 4th Baron Denman . The two titles have been linked since then.

He attended Shrewsbury School in Shrewsbury in the county of Shropshire . During the Second World War Denman was in action; he served in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Regiment in the Middle East , Mediterranean and India . In 1943 he was given the rank of major in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in the Territorial Army (TA; Territorialheer ), the British Army's volunteer reserve . He has received several awards for his services in the war. He was the 1942 Military Cross (Military Cross; MC) awarded. In 1947 he was awarded the Award of Territorial Decoration (TD).

Politics and other offices

1945 Denman failed in the Leeds Central constituency in Leeds for the Conservative Party . He held numerous offices. He was chairman ( chairman ) of the Marine & General Mutual Life Assurance Society. He was Director ( Director ) of Consolidated Gold Fields, Director ( Director ) and Senior Advisor of Close Brothers Group plc (a holding and investment company), and Director of British Water and Wastewater Ltd. He was also a director of C Tennant, Sons & Co , the family business of Colin Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner .

He was a member of the Committee for Middle East Trade (COMET). He was also President ( President ) of the Royal Society for Asia Affairs, President of the New Zealand UK Chamber Of Commerce, the joint foreign trade chamber for Great Britain and New Zealand , and Vice-President ( Vice-President ) of the Middle East Society and the Saudi-British Society . He was a trustee of the Kitchener Memorial Fund and the Arab-British Chamber Charitable Foundation. He was also temporarily governor of Windlesham House School.

honors and awards

In 1976 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire . In 2011 he received the World Class New Zealand Award in Auckland in recognition of his services to economic cooperation between Great Britain and New Zealand; He accepted the award personally at the age of 95.

In 2004 he was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Italian "Royal Order of Francis I" ( Reale Ordine di Francesco I ).

Membership in the House of Lords

Inheriting the title of Baron Denman, Denman became an official member of the House of Lords on March 20, 1971 . He was a member of the Conservative Party . He gave his inaugural address on November 7, 1973. In Hansard , Denman's contributions from 1973 to 1999 are documented. In March 1999, he last spoke in the House of Lords. His membership in the House of Lords ended in 1999 with the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Private

Denman was since September 11, 1943 with Sheila Anne Stewart († 1987), the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Algernon Bingham Anstruther Stewart and his wife Edith Evelyn Vivian Stewart, married. Since then he has been widowed. The marriage had four children, a daughter and three sons. Denman died "peacefully" in his home at the age of 96.

The title heir is his eldest son Richard Thomas Stewart Denman (* 1946) as the 6th Baron.
