Charles E. Redman
Charles Edgar Redman (born December 24, 1943 in Waukegan , Illinois ) is an American business manager and former diplomat who was, among other things, ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany .
Life
After attending school he studied at the US Air Force Academy and acquired there in 1966 a Bachelor of Science (BS). During his subsequent military service in the US Air Force between 1966 and 1974, he also studied administration at Harvard University and graduated in 1968 with a Master of Arts (MA Government). During his military service, he was not only used in the Vietnam War, but was later as a Colonel Special Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Staff for intelligence services of the US Air Force.
After retiring from active military service he joined after attending the American Academy of Diplomacy in June 1974 in the diplomatic service and was first in the Operations Center and then as a staff assistant in the office for European affairs concerning the US State Department operates. In December 1976 he moved to the United States Embassy in France as political advisor , before he was then deputy director of the private office of then NATO Secretary General Joseph Luns from 1979 to 1982 . After a subsequent employment as political advisor at the embassy in Algeria , he became first deputy director and then acting director of the Office for European Security and Political Affairs in the State Department in August 1984.
In July 1985 he was promoted to first deputy spokesman for the State Department, then in October 1986 first to deputy and finally in June 1987 to Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs in the State Department.
He then was ambassador to Sweden from March 1989 to 1992 , before being appointed special representative for Haiti and then for the Balkan conflict after a renewed assignment in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . On October 31, 1994, Redman became ambassador to Germany and held this office until June 17, 1996.
After retiring from the diplomatic service, in 1996 he became Senior Vice President of Bechtel Corporation , the largest plant engineering and construction company in the United States.
