Charles FitzRoy (General)

Lord Charles FitzRoy (born July 17, 1764 - December 20, 1829 in London ) was an English officer, general in the British Army and politician .

Life

FitzRoy was born the second son of Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton and his wife Anne, daughter of Henry Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth . After studying at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge , he joined the British Army in 1782 with the rank of Ensign . In 1787 he became a captain in the Scots Guards and in 1788 equerry of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany . In 1793 and 1794 he served under him in the First Coalition War in Flanders .

1795 appointed King George III. him to his aide-de-camp with the rank of colonel . In 1798 he rose to major-general . In 1798 and 1799 he served in Ireland during the Irish Rebellion and then in England until 1809 . There he commanded a battalion of the 60th regiment on foot in 1804 and 1805. He was then Colonel of the 48th Regiment on Foot (Northamptonshire). In 1805 he became lieutenant-general and in 1814 general .

Between 1787 and 1796, and between 1802 and 1818, FitzRoy was a Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds . But he did not make a speech in the House of Commons . He supported Pitt and was for the abolition of slavery and Catholic emancipation .

FitzRoy died in his home in Berkeley Square, London , in 1829 and was buried in Wicken , Northamptonshire.
