Charles James McDonnell (born July 7, 1928 in Queens ; † February 13, 2020 in Totowa ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Newark .

Life

Charles James McDonnell was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark on May 29, 1954 .

After ordination, he was initially active in the pastoral care of the parish and at times as a pastor for the National Guard of New Jersey . In 1965 he was appointed military chaplain in the United States Army . During his service as a military chaplain, he was deployed in the Vietnam War and received several awards. In 1983 he received the honorary title of Papal Honorary Chaplain ( Monsignor ). In 1986 he was appointed Brigadier General and Vice Chief of the Military Chaplaincy Corps of the US Army.

In 1989 he retired from active military service and returned to pastoral care. In 1991 he was appointed Vicar General and Moderator of the Diocesan Curia of the Archdiocese of Newark.

Pope John Paul II named him on March 15, 1994 auxiliary bishop in Newark and titular bishop of Pocofeltus . The Archbishop of Newark, Theodore Edgar McCarrick , ordained him episcopal on May 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Peter Leo Gerety , Archbishop Emeritus of Newark, and Michael Angelo Saltarelli , Auxiliary Bishop of Newark.

On May 21, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

His tomb is in the crypt of the Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Newark.
