Charles Longuet

Charles Félix César Longuet (born February 14, 1839 in Caen , Département Calvados , † August 5, 1903 in Paris ) was a French journalist and Proudhonist .

Life

Charles Longuet was the son of a hosiery dealer and Felicitas Longuet . He was editor-in-chief of La rive Gauche (1864–1866). In July 1866 he was imprisoned for eight months in Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the French Pyrenees .

As a prominent member of the socialist labor movement in France and a supporter of Pierre-Joseph Proudhons , Longuet sat on the General Council of the First International (1866–67, 1871–72). He was proposed on January 9, 1866 by Hermann Jung and Eugène Dupont and elected on January 15. He served as corresponding secretary for Belgium (1866), delegate for Lausanne (1867), Brussels (1868), the London Conference (1871/1872).

As a member of the Paris Commune , he had to flee to England after its suppression. On March 17, 1883, Charles Longuet was one of the speakers at Marx's funeral in Highgate Cemetery . Longuet was one of the editors of the Journal officiel de la République française , the official organ of the Central Committee of the National Guard (March 20 to May 24, 1871).

family

On October 9, 1872, he married Jenny Caroline Marx in London, the eldest daughter of Jenny and Karl Marx , in the presence of Friedrich Engels and Albert Theiz .

Together they had five sons and one daughter:

  • Jean-Laurent-Fréderick, short Jean , called Johnny (born May 10, 1876 - September 11, 1938)
  • Harry Michel, called Harra (July 4, 1878 - March 20, 1883)
  • Edgar, called Wolf (* August 18, 1879 - December 12, 1950)
  • Marcel (April 1881 - 1949)
  • Jenny (born September 16, 1882; † 1952)

The mother Jenny Caroline died in January 1883. The sons Jean Longuet and Edgar Longuet were also involved as French socialists.
