Khatia Buniatishvili ( Georgian ხატია ბუნიათიშვილი ; born June 21, 1987 in Batumi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian - French pianist .

Life

Buniatishvili has been playing the piano since she was three and made her orchestral debut at the age of six. At first she was tutored by her mother, then later - in summer courses - by the French pianist Michel Sogny according to his not undisputed method. At the age of 15 she studied at the State Conservatory in Tbilisi with Tengiz Amirejibi , whom she names as one of her most important sources of inspiration. At the 2003 piano competition in Tbilisi she met Oleg Maisenberg , who recognized her great talent and convinced her to switch to the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . In 2008 she won third place at the 12th Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv as well as the awards “Best Performer of a Chopin Piece” and “Audience Favorite”.

Buniatishvili has performed at the Verbier Festival , Progetto Martha Argerich , Gidon Kremer's Chamber Music Festival Lockenhaus , Gstaad Festival , La Roque d'Anthéron Festival and Saratoga Festival , among others . She played with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , the St. Petersburg Philharmonic , the NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen . In 2008 she made an appearance at Carnegie Hall .

In 2012 she received the Echo Klassik in the category young artist (piano) with her album Franz Liszt , published by Sony Classical. In the 2011/12 season she was the “rising star” of the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Wiener Musikverein. From the 2012/13 to 2014/15 season, Khatia Buniatishvili was an artist in the “Junge Wilde” series at the Dortmund Konzerthaus . In 2014 she performed with Placido Domingo at a concert at the iTunes Festival in London. On June 13, 2015, she played with the United Nations Orchestra at the official concert for the 70th anniversary in Geneva. In April 2016 she played Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to mark the 80th birthday of the conductor Zubin Mehta . In addition to her solo activities, she often plays chamber music, among others. a. with duo partners such as Renaud Capuçon , Gidon Kremer and Lisa Batiashvili .

In 2016 Buniatishvili was awarded the Echo Klassik for her album Kaleidoscope ( solo recording , 19th century music, piano).

Buniatishvili speaks five languages ​​(Georgian, English, French, Russian, German) and lives in Paris .

Her sister Gvantsa Buniatishvili , who is one year older than her, is also a pianist. Occasionally both perform together.
