Chimonanthus praecox , also known as Chinese winter bloom , is a kind from the kind of Chimonanthus from the family of calycanthaceae . The plant is called làméi (蠟梅) in Chinese , rōbai (蝋 梅) in Japanese and Kor.  납매 (蠟梅) , German: 'Nab Mae' in Korean .

description

It is a shrub that sheds its leaves in winter and reaches a height of up to 4 m. The leaves are 5 to 29 cm long and 2 to 12 cm wide. It has a very fragrant, drooping flower between Christmas and March. It has 15 to 21 yellow or yellow-green tepalum on stems , which are usually purple-red inside.

The plant was first described by Heinrich Friedrich Link and is known by the synonyms:

use

The plant is cultivated in the garden because it blooms in colorless winter. The varieties Chimonanthus praecox 'Grandiflorus' and Chimonanthus praecox 'Luteus' received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society .

ingredients

The plant is not related to the allspice , Pimenta dioica , although the English name Japanese allspice suggests this. The seeds of Chimonanthus praecox contain a poisonous alkaloid called calycanthine. An oil made from the flowers is used in traditional Chinese medicine .
