The Chippewa River is an approximately 195 km long tributary of the Minnesota River in the west and southwest of the US state Minnesota .

Over the Minnesota River it is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River .

Run

The Chippewa River rises in Chippewa Lake in Douglas County , 11 km northwest of Alexandria and flows through several lakes on its upper reaches. It initially flows west into Grant County , where it turns south for the remainder of its course through Counties Pope , Stevens , Swift, and Chippewa . The cities of Hoffman , Cyrus and Benson lie on its course and it flows into the Minnesota River in Montevideo . Some stretches of the river, especially in the middle reaches through Pope and Swift Counties, have been straightened and canalized .

Larger tributaries of the Chippewa River in Pope County are the approximately 70 km long Little Chippewa River , which runs mostly southwest through the counties Douglas and Pope, and in Benson the approximately 145 km long East Branch Chippewa River , which rises in southeast Douglas County and after an initial southerly course through Pope County, on which it flows through several lakes, turns west in Swift County.
