Choi Kyu-ha (other spelling: Choi Kyu-hah ) (born July 16, 1919 in Genshū , Kōgendō Sub - Province, Chōsen Province , former Japanese Empire , today's South Korea ; † October 22, 2006 in Seoul , South Korea) was from 1976 to 1979 Prime Minister and President of South Korea from 1979 to 1980 .

Choi studied English language and literature and political science in Japan during World War II . From 1946 he worked in the provisional government in South Korea. The main part of his career (1951 to 1971) he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Minister 1967-1971) and in the diplomatic service, including in Japan and as ambassador to Malaysia . In 1975 he was initially acting, from 1976 officially the 12th Prime Minister of South Korea. After the assassination of President Park Chung-hee in October 1979, he succeeded him on December 6, 1979 as the fourth President of South Korea. As early as December 12th, Chun Doo-hwan carried out a military coup and, as army chief, declared a nationwide state of emergency on May 17, 1980. In August 1980, Choi resigned as president.
