Christian Adolph Pescheck (born April 12, 1752 in Eibau near Zittau , † November 21, 1826 ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian .

Life

Christian Adolph Pescheck was a son of Christian Friedrich Pescheck (1724–1789), who had been pastor in Eibau since 1751, and Christiana Rahel Pescheck (1730–1781) and a grandson of the mathematician and writer Christian Pescheck . He educated himself under the direction of the vice-principal Müller in Zittau in the local grammar school and began his academic career in 1770 in Wittenberg . Schröckh , Weickhmann , Hofmann, Hiller and others were his most important teachers there in the field of theology . His industry did not fade, although he often struggled with oppressive want and physical suffering. After completing his academic career, he became a member of the preachers' college in Zittau and often entered the pulpit with applause. His still very limited circumstances forced him to give private lessons (including his younger brother Christian August Pescheck ). His situation improved only slightly when he became pastor in the mountain village of Jonsdorf near Zittau in 1773 , as the income associated with it was extremely meager. Under these circumstances he was comforted by the affection of his community, the friendly location of the place and his happy marriage to Karoline Dorothea, née Karoline Dorothea, which he entered into on May 2, 1786. Klien, a daughter of Pastor Klien in Cunnersdorf near Görlitz . The couple had their son Christian Adolf Pescheck .

In his leisure hours Pescheck occupied himself with patriotic history and statistics. At the same time he worked for several magazines, especially the Lausitz magazine . This subheading includes the following articles:

  • Something about the condition of the candidates for the office of preacher in ... , in: Deutsches Museum , 1784, 4th St., p. 379 ff.
  • Some corrections to Schmidt's letters about Herrnhut, concerning Zittau , in: Lausitzsches Magazin , 1787, p. 345 ff.
  • About those passages in our old hymns where the enemy is remembered in: Lausitzsches Magazin , 1789, p. 69 ff.
  • Juxtaposition of two old penitential songs , in: Lausitzsches Magazin , 1789, p. 73 ff.
  • Reply to a lady regarding her husband's disbelief , in: Lausitzsches Magazin , 1789, p. 277 ff.
  • Contribution to the calculation of the population in Upper Lusatia, along with remarks , in: Lausitzsches Wochenblatt or contributions to the history of Upper and Lower Lusatia , July 1790, p. 9 ff.

  • Thanksgiving song of a country preacher , in: Lausitzsches Magazin , 1792, p. 261 ff.

Pescheck's circumstances did not improve when he became pastor in Großschönau in 1795 . He suffered insults from his community there and could only gradually acquire a certain affection. Therefore a call to Zittau was welcome, where in 1797 he received the post of catechist and first prison preacher. He entered the pulpit with much applause. However, he continued to have financial worries because of his low salary. Only in 1803 did his situation improve. Around this time he became first deacon , archdeacon in 1809 and first pastor in 1816, member of the school commission and inspector of the preachers' college of candidates. In 1824 he celebrated his master’s jubilee. With a very strong constitution, his mental and physical strength only began to gradually decline in his 64th year of life. He no longer dared to go into the pulpit. He received an official assistant in his son, who had held the office of country preacher not far from Zittau for several years. He died on November 21, 1826 at the age of 74, valued for his honesty, the conscientious fulfillment of his profession, and his humility.
