Joachim Samuel Weickhmann (born April 18, 1712 in Danzig , Polish Prussia , † October 18, 1774 in Wittenberg , Electorate of Saxony ) was a German Lutheran theologian . He was professor and rector of the University of Wittenberg and provost of the castle church .

Life

He was the son of Joachim Weickhmann , who was a senior at Danzig's ecclesiastical ministry , and of Anne Elisabeth, daughter of the syndic of the estates of the Duchy of Magdeburg, Johann August Boeckmann. One brother was Gottlieb Gabriel Weickhmann , who later became mayor of Danzig.

Joachim Samuel Weickmann enjoyed a good education from his father at an early age. He moved to the Marienschule in Gdansk, subsequently received private lessons and attended the Gdansk grammar school . There he was trained in theology by Wilhelm Paul Verpoorten and Johann Georg Abicht , by Carl Ludwig Hoheisel (1692-1732) in Greek and Hebrew, by Samuel Friedrich Willenberg (1663-1748) in natural and international law, and by Gottfried Lengnich in Latin and History and by Michael Christoph Hanow in philosophy. Trained by these teachers, he acquired the skills needed to attend university.

On April 16, 1733, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he found accommodation in the house of Johann Wilhelm von Berger , who, as his patron, had a great influence on him. In Wittenberg, he first completed a basic course in philosophy. In addition, he attended lectures by Karl Gottlob Sperbach in the oriental languages, with Johann Wilhelm Hoffmann in history, with Martin Hassen he learned the English language and with Georg Friedrich Schröer philosophy. Trained in this way, he turned to studying theology. In addition he frequented the lectures on dogmatics , morals , hermeneutics and polemics with Christoph Heinrich Zeibich ; on the biblical books, exegesis and homiletics with Karl Gottlob Hofmann and practiced in private disputes with Schröer on other theological topics. With Augustin Leyser he also attended lectures on natural and international law as well as canon law .

Under his uncle von Berger, he laid the first foundations of his academic career by becoming a master of philosophy on October 17, 1739 . He then acquired the right to hold public philosophical lectures with the dissertation de fontibus veritatis sacrae in rivulis profanis sparsae and, after giving his disputation de animorum immortalitate platonica , he was accepted as an adjunct in the philosophy faculty on September 16, 1741 . After he was admitted to the theological faculty as a candidate (comparable to that of a baccalaureate in theology) through another pamphlet, he acquired the degree of licentiate in theology on November 16, 1741 and received an extraordinary professorship in philosophy in 1743. After Johann Kaspar Haferung died, he was appointed fourth full professor of theology by his sovereign in 1744 and was associated with Ephorus the electoral scholarship holder. In order to meet the demands of the professorship, Weickmann received his doctorate in theology on November 19, 1744 .

In the summer semester of 1748 he became provost at the Wittenberg Castle Church and assessor of the Wittenberg consistory , succeeding Christoph Heinrich Zeibich . Weickmann dealt with homiletics and pastoral theology in his lectures and experienced the increasing decline of Lutheran orthodoxy at the Wittenberg Academy. He also took part in the organization of the Wittenberg Academy and was rector of the Wittenberg University in the winter semesters 1746, 1750, 1756, 1762 and 1768 . After the Wittenberg Castle Church was destroyed in 1760, he did everything he could to rebuild it. His epitaph is on the Wittenberg Castle Church, on the north wall of the ship in the 3rd yoke.
