Christian III von Pfalz-Zweibrücken (born November 7, 1674 in Strasbourg ; † February 3, 1735 in Zweibrücken ) was Count Palatine of Birkenfeld , Bischweiler and Rappoltstein and from 1731, when his cousin Gustav Samuel Leopold died, the Kleeburg line ruling in Pfalz-Zweibrücken died out, also Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken.

Life

Christian was the eldest son of Count Palatine and Duke Christian II of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld (1637–1717) from his marriage to Katharina Agathe (1648–1683), daughter of Count Johann Jacob von Rappoltstein .

He began his career in the French military and took over the Alsatian Regiment in 1697 . In 1702 he was promoted to maréchal de camp and in 1704 to lieutenant general. Militarily he was able to distinguish himself in the battle of Oudenaarde . After the death of his father in 1717, he left the army.

In a settlement concluded on December 24, 1733 in Mannheim with Elector Karl Philipp von der Pfalz , Christian received the principality of Zweibrücken .

His grave is in the Alexander Church in Zweibrücken .

Through his son Friedrich Michael he became a progenitor of the Bavarian kings .

Marriage and offspring

Christian III married on September 21, 1719 at Lorentzen Castle Karoline (1704–1774), daughter of Count Ludwig Kraft von Nassau-Saarbrücken , with whom he had the following children:
