Christian Maximilian Baer (born August 24, 1853 in St. Johannis (Nuremberg) , † January 31, 1911 in Munich ) was a German still life, history and genre painter.

Life

Baer attended business school and high school in his hometown, then studied drawing at the Nuremberg Royal School of Applied Arts with Karl Raupp and accompanied his master on study trips to the Bavarian Alps.

Since 1874 Baer studied painting at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Alexander von Wagner and later with Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger . Baer found a connection to the Leibl-Trübner circle . Baer's house No. 21 on the Fraueninsel , the so-called Malergütl, was the artistic focus and became a meeting place for many well-known artists. The house, which has meanwhile been listed, is still owned by the family today.

From 1879 to 1907 Baer was represented at the Munich Glass Palace exhibitions. There he received a gold medal twice. Many of his works appeared in the gazebo .

His wife Rosa Baer, ​​b. Stradal (1858–1941), was the sister of the composer and Liszt student August Stradal . She also served as a model for many of his pictures.

At first, Baer mainly painted hunting still lifes for dining rooms in castles, as well as interiors and genre scenes . The early work is characterized by deep, strong colors. He also painted portraits on the side. In addition to his own works, in 1880 he made two copies after Rubens to order . The painting "Martin Bergheim explains the globe" from 1883 was bought by the Romanian king for Sinai Castle. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady near Memmingen , Baer created a ceiling painting .

In later years, Baer turned to landscape themes and placed the life of the Fraueninsel in the center. He mainly used the style of the Impressionists.
