Christina Victoria Grimmie (born March 12, 1994 in Marlton , New Jersey , † June 10, 2016 in Orlando , Florida ) was an American singer , actress, pianist and songwriter . She became known through the video platform YouTube , on which she published videos under the name zeldaxlove64 . She mainly covered chart songs by well-known artists such as Demi Lovato , Selena Gomez , Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus .

Career

Grimmie became known through a video with the singer Sam Tsui , in which both covered the song Just a Dream by Nelly . At the beginning of 2020, the video received more than 173 million views on the channel of producer Kurt Hugo Schneider and over 21 million views on Grimmie's own channel on the video platform YouTube . This had over 584 million video views and around 3.9 million subscribers in January 2019. The channel, published on February 9, 2009, received several awards from the YouTube platform. Her manager was Brian Teefey, Selena Gomez's stepfather.

From mid-June 2011, her first album Find Me was marketed on iTunes ; shortly before, her first single Advice had been presented for the first time on Radio Disney . In the second half of 2011 she toured with Selena Gomez. Grimmie took part in the sixth season of the American version of The Voice in 2014 and took third place. On February 21, 2016, their second EP, Side A, was released with four of their own songs.

death

After a concert on the evening of June 10, 2016 in Orlando , Florida , Grimmie was attacked at a meet and greet with fans by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl from Saint Petersburg , Florida, who shot her several times and she was among others seriously injured with a headshot. Her brother Marcus Grimmie wrestled the shooter to the ground immediately after the shot was fired, but the latter was able to free himself and shot himself. Christina Grimmie was taken to a hospital in Orlando, where her death was determined around 11 p.m. local time.

The perpetrator carried two firearms, two full magazines and a hunting knife. These had been overlooked during the security check.

The motive for the attack could not be fully clarified. The responsible police authority initially assumed that the perpetrator had been mentally confused, but also referred to the pending evaluation of the shooter's telephone and computer, which could have provided further information. In the final report, the police stated that Loibl was a lone perpetrator with a fixation on Grimmie, and spoke of "unrealistic infatuation".

Posthumous publications

In 2016, the film The Matchbreaker , in which she played a leading role, was released posthumously.

In April 2017 her family released another EP called Side B . This contains four more songs that Grimmie had already produced. This also includes a remixed version of their The Voice song I Won't Give Up . The single Invisible was released in advance and was released on February 16, 2017. On June 9, 2017 Grimmie's family released the album All is Vanity with ten songs; the three songs from Side B- EP are also included.
