Burchard received lessons from private teachers and attended the Kiel city school. At the age of 12 he came to the educational institution of his uncle Georg Heinrich Burchard, who was provost of the consistory in Segeberg and the first preacher in Heiligenhafen . This was followed by medical studies at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , especially with Günther Christoph Schelhammer . Further studies took him to Saxon universities and to Holland, where he stayed with the anatomist Frederik Ruysch in Amsterdam. There was an educational trip to Denmark and Sweden before moving to Kiel to new trials in 1704 for Schelhammer licentiate doctorate of medicine.
In 1708 he was appointed extraordinary professor of medicine in Kiel. In July 1716 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. Burchard held the position of rector of the university in 1720, 1726, 1732 and 1738 .
From the end of 1715, Burchard was married to Henrike Maria Schelhammer (1684-1720), the daughter of the above Kiel professor and his wife Maria Sophia Conring . After the early death of his wife, Burchard married in February 1721 in Tönning Katharina Burgund (1692–1740), widow of the Tönning pharmacist Michael Wassenberg (1679–1719) and daughter of the Tönning mayor Friedrich Gerbrand Burgund and his wife Katharina Oven. The daughter Justine Margarethe Sophie came from the first marriage. Children of the second marriage were the sons Julius Ludwig (1723–1771), Dr. and Senator in Rostock; Ernst Friedrich (1724–1749), Dr. med. in Rostock; Johann Gottlieb (1732–1785), Dr. jur. in Rostock; August Christian (* around 1737).
