Christoph Schmitz (born October 26, 1965 in Kevelaer ) is a German trade unionist and journalist . Since 2019 he has been a member of the federal board of the United Service Union (ver.di).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1984 at the Kardinal-von-Galen-Gymnasium in his place of birth and doing basic military service until 1985, he began studying. From 1985 to 1991 he studied German , musicology , middle and modern history at the University of Cologne . Degree: Magister Artium

Professional activities

During his studies from June 1987 to September 1991 he worked as a freelance journalist at the Rheinische Post in Geldern and then until 1993 he completed a newspaper traineeship at the Rheinische Post in Düsseldorf . He then worked as a daily newspaper editor for this newspaper (local, regional, political news, parliamentary editorial office in Berlin ). From 2001 to 2006 he was editor and chief reporter (from 2004) at the Bild newspaper in the Berlin capital office, then from 2006 to 2009 press spokesman and head of the press office of the Bundestag parliamentary group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . Then he was press spokesman and head of the press office of the ver.di federal administration until 2015 , from 2015 to 2019 he headed the principle area as trade union secretary of the federal executive board and was mainly responsible for its content and organizational work.

At the 2019 Federal Congress in Leipzig , he was elected to the federal executive board with 96.6 percent of the votes. He is there, the head of the Department 1 Financial Services , the Department 2 supply and disposal, the Department of 8 Media , Art & Industry and the Department 9 telecommunications , information technology , data processing , Innovation and Good work , self-employed , Master * inside / technicians * inside / engineers .

He is a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party.
