Christopher Holmes, Baron Holmes of Richmond , MBE (* 15. October 1971 in Peterborough ) is a British former swimmer and politician of the Conservative Party . He has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since September 2013 .

Life

Holmes visited the Harry Cheshire Comprehensive School (since September 2002: Baxter College) in Kidderminster in the county of Worcestershire . As a teenager he was already active as a swimmer. As a teenager, at the age of 14, he developed familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), a rare genetic eye disease that results in incomplete vascularization of the peripheral retina . The disease occurred unexpectedly in Holmes; he woke up in bed one morning and could no longer see. In Holmes the disease led to permanent, complete blindness . He entered the City of Birmingham Swimming Club in Birmingham and continued training as a swimmer; There he underwent the regular training program that all athletes who want to take part in the Olympic Games completed .

Between 1985 and 2001, Holmes was a member of the British national swimmer team; he was team captain for five years. For Great Britain he took part in a total of four Paralympic Games between 1988 and 2000 . At the Paralympic Games, he won a total of nine gold medals, six at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona and three at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta , as well as five silver and one bronze medal. He is the owner of a total of 7 world records, 10 European records and 2 Olympic records.

He studied political science at King's College of the University of Cambridge , where he earned a master's degree earned. He graduated from BBP Law School with a degree in law . His major at BBP Law School was commercial law. From 1994 to 2000 he worked as a freelance journalist . From 1995 to 1997 he was Project Consultant of the Royal Mail Olympic Sponsorship Team. From 2002 to 2009 he worked as a solicitor at the Ashurst law firm in London . His legal areas of specialization included labor law , company pension schemes and pension law (Employment and Pensions Law).

In August 2009 he was appointed Director of Paralympic Integration at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Holmes has also been Commissioner for the Disability Rights Commission since 2002 .

In 1993 Holmes was named a member of the Order of the British Empire in the annual New Year Honors List in recognition of his services to swimming for people with disabilities ("For services to Swimming for the Disabled.").

Membership in the House of Lords

In August 2013 it was announced that Holmes was to be made a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Conservative Party . He was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On September 13, 2013 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Holmes of Richmond , of Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames , and has been a member of the House of Lords since then. He was officially inducted into the House of Lords on October 30, 2013, with the assistance of Kenneth Baker, Baron Baker of Dorking , and Paul Deighton, Baron Deighton .
