Sir Christopher Martin Dobson (born October 8, 1949 in the United Kingdom , according to another source in Rinteln , Germany , † September 8, 2019 ) was a British chemist , molecular biologist and biophysicist . He was the John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Chemical and Structural Biology at the University of Cambridge . Dobson was best known for his work on protein folding disorders .

Life

Dobson earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oxford in 1970 , a Bachelor of Science in 1971 , a Masters in 1974 and a PhD in 1976 with Robert Joseph Patton Williams . In 2007 he obtained a Scientiæ Doctor from the University of Cambridge . He worked as an assistant professor at Harvard University from 1977 and as a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , before returning to Oxford University in 1980, first as a lecturer , then as a reader . In 1996 he took over a professorship in chemistry and in 1998 became director of the Oxford Center for Molecular Sciences . In 2001 he moved to the University of Cambridge as Professor of Biochemistry and Structural Biology . From 2007 until his death he was a Masters from St John's College, Cambridge University.

Act

Dobson was able to gain new insights into protein folding and its perturbations using improved nuclear magnetic resonance and other structural investigation methods such as electron microscopy , atomic force microscopy , X-ray crystallography, and spectroscopy (including fluorescence and circular dichroism ) . Important results concern the clinical importance of these disorders, especially for the formation of amyloid fibrils and the development of diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease .

More recent work also deals with the use of biomolecules in materials science and nanotechnology .

Dobson published more than 650 scientific publications (as of 2014), of which more than 30 in Science or Nature .
