Christ Church

The Christ Church in Rheinfelden is under the patronage of Jesus Christ . The church in the Rheinfeld city center in the eastern neighborhood of the town hall serves the Protestant community in the city center and the Warmbach suburb as a parish church.

history

The comparatively young industrial city of Rheinfelden counted 673 Evangelicals in 1900, together with the surrounding villages of Nollingen and Warmbach, and in the mid-1920s as early as 1904. The first Evangelical pastor, Heinrich Eckhardt, had lived in Salmegg since 1922 because he had no parsonage of his own . Eckhardt was instrumental in building a Protestant church and a rectory. This was built from September 1929 to October 1930. At the same time, an architectural competition was launched for the construction of the new church. The competition was won by the architect Wilhelm Preschany from Efringen-Kirchen . The foundation stone was laid on September 22, 1935. The initially estimated costs of 235,000 Reichsmarks increased to over 300,000 Reichsmarks. The church was finally consecrated on October 10, 1937.

description

Exterior construction

Christ statue

The Christ Church is a rectangular building with a gable roof . To the north and south there are smaller and lower extensions, the north serves as space for the community, the south opens a two-storey vestibule accessible via arcades on three sides. In the northeast, the bell tower is built over the sacristy , which is also closed off by a gable roof running across the nave . It has sound arcades coupled above on all four sides; The clock faces of the tower clock are on the west and east sides.

Outside the church there is a statue of Christ created by the Karlsruhe artist Otto Schneider. Although the figure is portrayed with combative pathos and thus based on the stylistic understanding of art under National Socialism , there were attempts by the NSDAP district leadership to prevent the figure from being erected. It was possible to hide the statue at first and put it up two days before the inauguration of the church.

Interior and equipment

Bell tower

The nave is covered with a wooden ceiling and receives light on both sides from five high arched windows. The Stuttgart artist Rudolf Yelin the Younger was responsible for the design of the church . He made the stained glass on the arched windows. They show the motifs: baptism , temptation , Jesus and the children, Jesus and Nicodemus , the Sermon on the Mount and the Lord's Supper . The mosaics in the middle of the five choir wall niches are also by Yelin . These show a healing scene, women at the tomb of Jesus Christ, the appearance of Jesus to the apostles Peter and James . In addition to the cafeteria with the cross, there is a baptismal font with a baptismal bowl in the chancel.

The four-part ringing has the nominal values f ′, a °, c ′ and d ′. The bronze f′-bell is the smallest; it was made in 1900 by an unknown bell founder. The other three bells made of cast steel were made by the Bochum Association in 1951 .
